How to Become a Faster Runner
My neighbour was out with me recently searching for a particular retail shop fitting when he was telling his son was into running. He asked me if I had any ideas on how he could become a faster runner. Here is some general advice I gave him that is applicable to most people.
Becoming a faster runner requires hard work and practice. You cannot take a pill or drink an energy drink and magically run faster. Here are a few ways to help you become a faster runner.
If you are starting a running training regimen, start slowly and be consistent, so you can get used to running. Run three times a week, and build your way to three mile runs.
After you are comfortable with running regularly, you can start training for speed. One easy way to do so is practice sprints on a track. For example, on a standard 400 meter track, you can run normally for the curves but sprint when the track is straight. Do this for a couple of miles per session.
Track your speed by having a regular one-mile time trial run. This is best done on a track. Do this once a month or so.
Consider participating in races, as this can motivate your speed training and also spur you to run faster.
To prevent injuries that often afflict runners training for speed, incorporate weight training and yoga into your exercise regimen. Weight training helps strengthen muscles, and yoga helps ease tight muscles, like hamstrings, and can increase flexibility, too. This can perhaps mean a longer stride, which can help you run faster!
