The Gunner’s Hit List
For the last few years there has been little success for Arsenal football club. Considered one of the best sides in Europe and part of the “big four” in the Premiership, (also consisting of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool) Arsenal are well respected for the way they try to nurture young talent. However, in the past, they could do this and still win trophies because they had experience and leadership in the squad as well.
These days, the average age of an Arsenal squad seems to be barely over 20 (which is an age where you should be saving up for the cheapest leather sofas, not living the high life and driving fancy cars). While they do have some amazing players, they need desperately to get some experienced heads in that side as well. You could also argue that the spine of their team is very weak despite these great youngsters and this needs looking at. The positions that really need attention are centre back and central midfield. In the past Tony Adams was the heart of the Arsenal defence along with Martin Keown. Patrick Viera was a central midfielder for the gunners during their most successful period in the late 90s and early 00s.
Since the departure of these players, Arsenal have lost the element of grit, determination and leadership that is required in all teams if they want success. In layman’s terms, they need a couple of strong centre backs in the build of Vermaelen whom they purchased last year and a powerful, gritty central midfielder like Viera.
It is thought that Mesut Ozil, the young German who is impressing everyone at the World Cup, is on the Arsenal hit list. While this would be a good capture, it isn’t what Arsenal need. They could have to replace Cesc Fabregas who looks fed up with his trophy-less seasons with the Gunners, so I guess Ozil is a start. However, Arsenal’s real needs lie elsewhere and Wenger may have to finally spend some money in order to make Arsenal successful again.
