Roma captain considers quitting.

Roma talisman, Francesco Totti, nearly called time on his tenure at the Eternal City club last season. At 33, it is clear that Totti will be retiring soon, but he only recently signed a five year contract and stated that he plans to see that contract through. His talk of retirement came after Roma lost last season’s Coppa Italia final to rivals, Inter Milan. They also fell short of Inter in the league, finishing in second place once more.

Totti was sent off in that final following a horrendous tackle on Mario Balotelli, the Internazionale striker who is possibly on his way to Manchester City. Totti has been banned for four games in next season’s Coppa Italia as a result of his red card. The fallout from that tackle, along with the punishment he received had an effect on Totti. He stated that if it were not for those close to him, he would have ended his 18 year career with the Giallorossi.
Totti has been the inspirational captain and talisman for Roma for many years and, especially in his prime, he was seen as the main goal-scoring and creative player in the team, wearing the coveted number 10 on his jersey. Even with offers to move to other massive clubs in Europe, Totti has always stayed faithful to the club he loves. “There was a time when I thought about quitting,"he said, “But when there’s passion it’s right to continue.” Totti clearly still believes in his own abilities and will try yet again in 2010/11 to help Roma lift their first Scudetto in a decade.
